Within the last month, we’ve taken a couple trips to White Rock, and they’ve been those last minute trips where we don’t know where we’re headed… we just go. Those days end up being some of the best days. We found ourselves cruising on zero avenue…and before we knew it we’re into White Rock.
White Rock is a great place for families. The beach is large and the ‘strip’ is divided into two sections, with housing briefly interrupting the hustle and bustle of the strip before resuming once again. That first section of the strip (if travelling West) houses the famous fish and chip spot, ‘Moby Dick’s.’ We knew it was a hot spot from the crowd of people always lined up outside, a sure sign that this place is the real deal. Having initially steered clear simply because of the long line up, this visit to White Rock was going to include tasting that famous fried fish.
We ordered two kids meals, a three-piece of cod fish and chips and also the calamari. It was a lot of food and more than enough, and trust me, we can eat a lot. The fish itself, the batter was nice and light and crisp. It wasn’t heavy at all. It was really tasty and the lightness of the batter let the taste of the fish shine through. Yum! The calamari was lightly fried and was tender and delicious. There were no tough pieces. Both dipping sauces nicely complimented the fish and calamari.
Upon getting our food we choose to sit on the beach, and we were lucky enough to find a vacant table to sit at. Talk about lunch with a view! We had some visitors, the seagulls who watched us intently for a dropped french fry.
After eating we strolled along the beach and then the strip. It’s lined with quaint little shops and eateries of all kinds. One stop that our kids always look forward to going to, is the ice-cream shop ‘Cones.’ Besides the delicious ice-cream being served, there’s always some delightful tunes playing and the owner is often serenading to the music playing in the shop. It makes for a fun experience.
So if you’re looking for a great beach, amazing fish and chips plus some yummy ice-cream, White Rock is a definite stop to make with the family this summer!
